A sadly neglected nineteenth century corner building on the edge of Merrion Square was designated a protected structure due to the mention of Sweny’s Chemist in Joyce’s Ulysees. Work included structural upgrading, reinstatement of windows and extensive brickwork repairs. The chemist was untouched. An extensively fire-damaged interior was re-modelled to provide comfortable highly serviced apartments, whilst retaining original features. Insulation and draft sealing were carried out without restricting the original building fabric from breathing. New fittings were favoured over reproduction, but chosen to fit in with period features.
