The kitchen is enclosed by a tiny garden with tall hedging, necessary for privacy, but darkening the room. The proposal was to enlarge the room, enhance the connection between the inside and the tiny garden, and flood the room with light. Enlargement could have darkened the room, and so windows were run up to a raised ceiling, drawing natural light into the far reaches of the room.
A window seat draws the occupants into the garden and provides storage below.
The lofty proportion and generous steps give the garden a sense of place.
